A boardwalk stroll is one of summer’s best pleasures. Nostalgia-induced sights and sounds of classic arcade games, quaint restaurants, music venues, and the smell of the salty ocean air are all enjoyed at the Virginia Beach Boardwalk.
As one of Virginia Beach’s most popular attractions, the Virginia Beach Boardwalk is affectionately called “America’s favorite boardwalk.” And it’s easy to see why with its coastal charm, live music events, and endless amounts of entertainment. Get to know one of our favorite destinations with these fun facts about the Virginia Beach Boardwalk.
When was the Virginia Beach Boardwalk first built?
Originally built in 1888, the VB Boardwalk has been offering visitors a place to stroll along the oceanfront for over 120 years. It was originally made of wooden planks, which were destroyed by a fire in 1907. The new construction of the boardwalk began in 1926 with the concrete pathway we know today.
How long is the boardwalk?
The boardwalk is 28 feet wide and stretches for three miles from 2nd to 40th Street. One of its best features is the separate bike path that is ideal for taking a stroll, rollerblading, and biking.
Accolades
Over the years, the boardwalk has received numerous awards and recognition including:
- Named one of the top 10 U.S. Boardwalks by National Geographic
- Travel + Leisure named it as one of America’s Best Beach Boardwalks
Live music
The boardwalk is host to a variety of live music events every year in Virginia Beach. With four oceanfront stages at 7th, 17th, 24th, and 31st Streets, there are plenty of opportunities for festivals, concerts, and other entertainment, all with an ocean view.
King Neptune
The icon of Virginia Beach, the statue of King Neptune is a 34-foot bronze structure that stands guard at Neptune Park on 31st Street. It’s one of the most popular spots along the boardwalk for a photo opportunity.
