Virginia Beach serves as the hub to the area known as “America’s First Region,” which includes cities such as Norfolk, Portsmouth, Chesapeake, and more. Get out and explore more of our state with these day trips from Virginia Beach.
Norfolk

Known as the cultural center of the region, Norfolk is a 400-year-old port city and home to the largest naval base in the world. Norfolk is also proud to offer numerous historical attractions, museums, and the NEON District (New Energy of Norfolk). Here visitors will find the Chrysler Museum of Art and Glass Studio, home to the beautiful Tiffany glass collection, the Harrison Opera House, and numerous theatres. Norfolk is located 20 miles west of Virginia Beach.
Portsmouth

As one of our favorite day trips from Virginia Beach, the historic town of Portsmouth is just across the river from Norfolk. Either drive from Norfolk to Portsmouth or take the paddlewheel ferry across the Elizabeth River to Portsmouth’s Old Towne Historic District. Relish in the quaint brick sidewalk and one of the largest collections of historical homes on the east coast.
Colonial Williamsburg Historic Area

For a bit of history, be sure to make the trip out to Colonial Williamsburg. As the world’s largest living history museum, Colonial Williamsburg spans 301 acres and is home to over 40 historic sites. Visitors can see a blacksmith shop, apothecary, the Governor’s palace, weaving demonstrations, a brickyard, and the carpenter’s yard. Colonial Williamsburg is located 60 miles northwest of Virginia Beach.
If you are up for it, head just 10 miles south of Colonial Williamsburg to Jamestown. As the first permanent English settlement in America, Jamestown is home to 18th Century year-old buildings, a replica of a 1610 fort, and replicas of the three ships that brought settlers to Virginia from England.
Richmond

Visit the state’s capital, Richmond, just 2.5 hours northwest of Virginia Beach. As one of America’s oldest major cities, Richmond offers a variety of historical landmarks and museums like the Edgar Allen Poe Museum. Plus, take some time to meander through the historic streets of Monument Avenue, Jackson Ward, and Maymont. If outdoor activities are more your thing, the James and Appomattox River provide excellent opportunities for water sports such as fishing, rafting, and canoeing.
