Eat like a Virginia Beach local

Image of four friends eating at a restaurant.

Virginia Beach is a top tourist destination along the East Coast but that doesn’t mean you have to eat like a tourist when in town. Virginia Beach is well known for its seafood, craft beer scene, and eclectic eateries and there’s nothing like dining like a local when staying here. Come check out some of the popular spots among locals for fantastic dining in Virginia Beach!

Big Sam’s

Big Sam’s is a family-friendly and family-run restaurant that specializes in raw bar seafood and signature dishes. You’ll feel like you’re at a friend’s Hawaiian-themed backyard party with the tikis and friendly atmosphere. Stop by for breakfast, lunch, or dinner, or simply for a few cocktails after a great afternoon relaxing on the beach. They’re open from 7 a.m. to 2 p.m. each day and are located right on the Rudee Inlet.

Citrus Breakfast & Lunch

Citrus Breakfast & Lunch is known for its amazing brunch and was once featured on “Diners, Drive-ins, and Dives!” They also have a menu with healthy options as well as a vegan menu. The weekend breakfast specials are different each time you go so it’s always a new surprise for breakfast. They’re open from 7 a.m. to 3 p.m. each day.

Commune

The community-style dining establishment, Commune, is “all local, all the time” and has a great menu of fresh dishes both in the eatery and in the bakery. They’re open for breakfast and lunch each day or you can stop by the bakery for a hot cup of coffee and flaky croissant or delicious cupcake.

Dockside

Dockside has both a restaurant and seafood market so you can let the chefs prepare something special for you or buy your own fresh seafood if you’re on the go! Eat like the locals on the outdoor picnic tables and order raw oysters, shrimp, or the fresh catch of the day.

Doc Taylor’s

Originally a doctor’s office, Doc Taylor’s now makes people feel better with the amazing menu and option of eating breakfast and lunch at any time of the day. They’re famous with locals for their Bloody Marys and friendly service. Doc Taylor’s is open from 7 a.m. to 3 p.m. each day.

Margie & Ray’s

This local favorite has been featured by Coastal Living as a “Favorite Seafood Dive” in Virginia and has amazing, friendly service. Margie & Ray’s doesn’t accept reservations but is definitely a must-see in Virginia Beach and they’re open every day from 7 a.m. to 9 p.m.

Waterman’s Seafood Grille

This family-friendly restaurant offers a great menu and oceanfront dining right on their patio. Though this place is popular with the locals, first-time visitors must try The Original Waterman’s Orange Crush cocktail – or any of the crush beverages, really. They specialize in freshly caught seafood from local Virginia Beach fishermen and participate in the Sensible Seafood program.
Another option to satisfy multiple cravings is to simply stroll the boardwalk and get quick bites for a few places. Try an appetizer at one spot with drinks, then have the main course a bit down the boardwalk, and finally end your night with a sweet treat from a third location.
