The History of the Virginia Beach King Neptune Statue

Standing tall and proud at the gateway to the Atlantic Ocean, the King Neptune statue in Virginia Beach is more than just a photo op—it’s a powerful symbol of the sea, local culture, and the spirit of coastal Virginia. Towering 34 feet high at the entrance to Neptune Park on 31st Street, this bronze sea god is one of the most iconic and beloved landmarks on the East Coast. But how did he come to rule the Virginia Beach boardwalk?

The Vision Behind the Giant
The idea for King Neptune was born out of a desire to celebrate the ocean and enrich the city’s cultural landscape. In the early 2000s, the Neptune Festival—Virginia Beach’s annual celebration of art, music, and all things maritime—sought a centerpiece that could honor the event’s mythical namesake. What better way to make waves than with a massive statue of Neptune himself?

A Sculpture with Depth
Enter Paul DiPasquale, a renowned sculptor known for bringing bold ideas to life. DiPasquale designed King Neptune with commanding features: a muscular torso, a flowing beard, and piercing eyes that gaze toward the ocean. In one hand, he holds his legendary trident; in the other, he cradles a sea turtle. Around him swirl dolphins, fish, and octopuses—all sculpted in stunning detail.

The statue was cast in bronze and installed in 2005, quickly becoming a beacon of Virginia Beach pride. The combination of artistry and marine mythology has made King Neptune a timeless figure that resonates with locals and visitors alike.
